Stiles' new approach pays
off in points

Southwest Missouri has its own version of a basketball lockout. Coach Cheryl Burnett has ordered Jackie Stiles out of the gym on off days and discouraged her 2 a.m. shooting sessions.

The sophomore guard, leading the nation in scoring (28.9 a game), is altering her workaholic behavior. She has reduced her famous workout of 1,000 made shots from daily to weekly.

''It's really hard for me to go for a day and not touch a ball,'' says Stiles, who tired late last season. ''If I'm exhausted and we have a day off, I try to take it. I listen to my body more, and it's helped because I feel fresher in games.

''Coach Burnett has worked on me, but it's taken a long time because I feel confident if I work hard and shoot a lot. I'm trying to get a balance.''

The 5-8, 140-pound Stiles has balanced her game since last season, when she was the nation's top freshman scorer (20.6). She's shooting 57.7% from the field, including 46.3% (25-for-54) from three-point range, and 81.5% (75-92) from the foul line while averaging 3.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

''Jackie scores so many different ways,'' says Burnett, whose No. 25 Bears are 8-3. ''She can dribble penetrate, pull up on a dime, hit the outside shot, get to the line. She gets more three-point plays than anyone I've ever seen.''

Stiles' fout-point play with 2.6 seconds left against Baylor gave her 52 points and the Bears and 87-86 win Dec. 2.

''I don't think Pistol Pete Maravich could shoot like that, and I saw him in person,'' Baylor coach Sonja Hogg says. ''People would have to see her to believe her.''

Stiles didn't have all those tricks last season. She and Burnett analyzed areas of weakness, including off-ball movement and outside shooting.

''In high school, I was all off the dribble,'' Stiles says. ''I never had to work without the ball. In college I had to learn to set screens, read screens, and make cuts.''

Stiles, along with SMS alum Melody Howard, who played two-plus seasons in the recently folded ABL, did a lot of shooting drills last summer. Stiles concentrated on coming off screens and shooting threes at game speed.

''She's so fundamental she could easily move to the next level now,'' Burnett says. ''With three more seasons, I can't imagine what she'll be like.''

Stiles, whose father, Pat, is a high school athletic director and coach, scored a Kansas-record 3,603 points at Claflin High.

''I'm shocked I'm leading the nation,'' she says. ''I go into games thinking, 'Do what it takes to win.' When you start worrying about, 'Am I leading the country?' that's when the pressure gets too great and your team starts not doing well.''

A 3.3 student who hasn't chosen a major, Stiles has one flaw, according to Burnett: forgetfulness. The player is famous for losing keys or locking them in her car. She showed up at shooting practice Sunday with two right sneakers.

For the keys, Stiles has an explanation besides her small-town habit of not locking doors: ''I'm always hurrying to do a workout.''
