WNBA.comMentator: Becky Hammon
Hammon Answers, 8/25/00

It seems like a lot longer than a year ago that the New York Liberty's Becky Hammon had postseason averages of 2.0 points and 8.3 minutes a game. The 5-6 guard has exploded since then, earning a spot in the starting lineup in the 2000 season and making an impact in the Liberty's quest for a WNBA title.

Becky took time out at Friday's practice before Game 2 of the WNBA Championship Series and answered some of your questions.

How is your ankle doing? How did you hurt it? Do you think it will hinder the way you perform in Game 2 in Houston?
Heather, Peekskill, NY

I actually don't know what I did to it. I think I was backpedaling and stepped on somebody's foot. I just twisted it — it's nothing bad. I didn't even really want to tape it up, but Lisa our trainer wanted to. It feels fine. It's a little sore, but it's fine.

I just want you to know that you continue to be a joy to watch. After watching you play at Colorado State for four years, I still marvel at your skills. You are the best! What was your favorite moment of the year?
Cheryl, Fort Collins, CO

Hmmmm & I think my favorite moment is yet to come. I think it's possible to win two games here (in Houston). It seems impossible to some people, but that doesn't always necessarily mean it's impossible. We come in here and win — that'll be my favorite moment. Last year, my favorite moment was when we came here and won, so we'll see what happens.

If you could choose any three living people to have dinner with you, who would they be?
Brian, Fort Collins, CO

Gosh, that's kind of deep, isn't it? (laughs) Whitney Houston — I'm a big fan of hers and she could give me some singing tips. Michael Jordan, so he could give me some basketball tips. And & Matthew McConaughey.

Have you and Spoon been practicing the half-court shot? How much cash did you get off of Reggie (Miller)?
Laura, Avoca, PA

(On Wednesday at practice) I broke even with Reggie, although I am up on him — I've beaten him three times this year and he's beaten me once. Spoon? She doesn't need practice — she already nailed it. She nailed the finale. Me and Reggie always have a good time messing around with it.

Just wanted to congrats to you and your teammates on making it to the Championship Series again. Keep your heads up despite the first game loss. I wanted to ask you where you get those New York City playground moves to the basket? You got game, girl! Keep playing hard.
Tim, New York, NY

The South Dakota playgrounds! (laughs) Actually, playing against guys growing up. You just have to get creative sometimes. I practiced all the time — little touch moves off the backboard, different spins and stuff. You really gotta develop a touch relationship with the backboard and the rim. It's really a God-given talent, too. I have great body control and coordination and those are all just God-given things.

Hey Becky, you are such a great player, when you are out on the court what motivates you the most and when in a "shooting slump," what do you personally do to get out of it? Good luck — kick some Comet butt.
Jody, Lancaster, PA

Well, what motivates me on the court is probably the same thing that motivates me off the court — a will to win. I'm competitive and don't like to lose. Whether that's an inner thing, I don't know, but it's always just been in me. I'm a very competitive person. Whatever I do, on the court or off, I'm just cautious because people are always watching and that's a powerful thing. You're always on your tippy toes.

A shooting slump? Awww, shooters shoot. You miss the next five, you might make the next five, that's how shooting is. You can never quit shooting — shoot and shoot till you're on, shoot when you miss, shoot when you make it. There's just some times when you have bad shooting nights. A slump I would consider half a season and one or two games, that isn't a slump, that's just how the ball drops sometimes. To get out of a shooting slump, you just have to get out and take more shots. You also have to gain confidence I think — confidence is the key. You have to keep that confidence going that you can make the next ten shots. You can't quit shooting!

I am a Liberty season ticketholder and sit right behind the Liberty bench. I have watched you play every game this season, but in this particular game against Houston you seemed to be intimidated by the legend of the Comets, why? You beat them before! Help me to understand.
Allen, Bronx, NY

I don't think we were intimidated at all. I just think we came out and didn't have that pep in our step and didn't have anything to do with intimidation. We respect their players a lot, but it's not a thing that we think we can't beat them. We had a rough shooting night (in Game 1) and that's the only reason we didn't beat them. If we had made one or two more baskets, that's a different game.
