WNBA.comMentator: Becky Hammon
Hammon Answers, 8/21/00 It seems like a lot longer than a year ago that the New York Liberty's Becky Hammon had postseason averages of 2.0 points and 8.3 minutes a game. The 5-6 guard has exploded since then, earning a spot in the starting lineup in the 2000 season and making an impact in the Liberty's quest for a WNBA title. Becky took time out before Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals to answer some of your questions.
Do you think that this is the year that New York will have the best chance at winning the Championship? Hammon: Yeah, I definitely think so. This is probably the best team that New York has had and I think we have all the tools this year. I think everybody's feeling it this year, we've got a really good shot at it. But Houston's been there, done that before, so we'd have to go and play the best basketball we've played all year.
I have a great suggestion. Why don't we play *NSYNC music throughout the entire game? I'm sure you wouldn't miss a single shot! Hammon: (Laughing) Well, I'm sure not everybody is as big an *NSYNC fan as I am. But B (Rebecca Lobo) exaggerated in her column a little bit. I wouldn't say all that's true. I do like the group and it was fun to get to meet them, but you gotta know B's sense of humor to understand that.
I just wanted to ask you if the tremendous times at CSU and the wins you had there ever come to your mind after a win like the second game over the Rockers? Hammon: No, not really. I think when you're out there, you're in the Garden. I don't think there's another atmosphere like that. My college years were very special to me, but after a while you move on. I cherish my years at CSU and some of the wins there, but it's just different. It's not any better of a feeling, just a different feeling.
Becky, I'm curious to know how you adjusted to the Big Apple lifestyle coming from a large city like Rapid City, SD. Was it scary? Any embarrassing stories to share? Hammon: No, I don't have any embarrassing moments, but the adjustment I think came last year. This year there hasn't been much of an adjustment. I did it last year. I got all that out of the way so I feel a lot more comfortable than last year.
What do you think of the one road game/two home games set up? Would you rather see a home/road/home series? Hammon: I like that in three games, you get two at home, but I think the setup should be you get the first game at home, then the middle one is on the road, then the last game is at home. Because when the first game is on the road, I think there's a lot of pressure on the away team. You're supposed to protect your home court, so it should be a bonus to get in there and get a steal for one. I think that first game is so important and it puts the other team's backs against the wall. So I think it's unfortunate that the better team has to play on the road first.
Hey, Becky! I've heard several times that you've got an excellent half-court shot. When are you going to show that talent off for all us Liberty fans? Hammon: I don't know, you gotta get here early enough when we're joking around or messing around before a game or after a practice or something. Most of the time, that's the only time I'll do it.
