WNBA.comMentator: Becky Hammon
Hammon Answers, 8/19/00 It seems like a lot longer than a year ago that the New York Liberty's Becky Hammon had postseason averages of 2.0 points and 8.3 minutes a game. The 5-6 guard has exploded since then, earning a spot in the starting lineup in the 2000 season and making an impact in the Liberty's quest for a WNBA title. Becky took time out before Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals and answered some of your questions.
Hey, Becky! I love the way you play ball! I was wondering, if you're a teenager and you just realized you might want to play basketball, is it still possible to have enough time to be a good player? It's never too late to become a great player. It's going to take more work probably, and it's harder to get experience, but you can do it if you set your heart and mind on it. You can accomplish anything.
My husband and I both graduated high school and college from South Dakota. We were wondering what high school you played for? I played for Rapid City Stevens High School. We never won the state championship. We got to the finals and lost on a last-second shot in overtime. There was five seconds left and I shot a free throw, then they took it the length of the floor and shot it. No time left. Sore subject — next question!
Do you think that New York will be able to pull off two games in a row? I think you can and will do it. Yeah, there's no doubt in my mind we can win two in a row. I think we have a tremendous amount of faith and confidence in each other. It's a whole different story playing us in the Garden, so we'll be ready to go.
What are some of your pregame rituals? Do they change when preparing for a big game, like the Conference Finals? I really don't have a lot of pregame rituals. I just try to catch a nap before the game, get a good meal and go out and get a lot of shots before the game, go to chapel.
I think that you are a very consistent three-point shooter and I was wondering how you became so consistent? You girls have to beat Cleveland! The Liberty deserve the Championship! Shooting a lot. Just repetition. I just really love to shoot the ball, so that's what I do in my spare time, I go shoot. Some people like to go ride bikes, I like to go shoot.
If New York wins the series against Cleveland, what team would you rather play, Houston or the Sparks? Both teams are really tough. I don't have a preference, though I think Houston's gonna win that series.
It must be a challenge being in a large city. What do you do with your free time? Why don't they have a Becky Beanie? In my spare time, I'm either sleeping or relaxing or hanging out with friends, maybe snag a movie. Nothing too much. Mostly sleeping, hanging out in my apartment. The Beanie things, I don't know. I think everybody's still a little shocked so they weren't prepared to have my memorabilia out there yet. We'll see what they come up with next year. I think those things are really cute. I've got some nieces and nephews who I'm sure would like them. TO THE TOP |
