Living Out of a Suitcase
By Becky Hammon, WNBA.com, 3/23/00 THEY SAY THAT TIME FLIES WHEN you're having fun, and that certainly was the case for me during part of the so-called "offseason." I feel like I lived the whole month of February out of a suitcase, which isn't often far from the way my whole summer goes. I began the month in great anticipation of all that my busy schedule had in store for me. It started off with my trip out to San Francisco to participate in the NBA All-Star 2ball competition, which was nothing but fun and excitement for me and my one guest. I was able to bring my older brother along for the festivities courtesy of the NBA. We then met up with fellow Liberty teammate Ms. Lobo to tackle all of the weekend activities, including parties, concerts and basketball. On All-Star Friday night, we went to David Stern's party, then headed out on the town with Rebecca, Tina Thompson (Houston Comets), Chamique Holdsclaw (Washington Mytics), and of course my big bro to attend an NBA concert hosted by Dana Carvey. All-Star Saturday started off with the NBA rookie challenge, followed by NBA 2ball, where I played with the Knicks' Allan Houston. Allan and I ended up finishing in the middle of the pack. All-Star Sunday was a busy one as well. In the morning, I had to get up and participate in celebrity 2ball, where I was paired with an actress from the TV show 7th Heaven. We won that, but faced some heavy competition from people like Evander Holyfield, and a guy we would all know as "Urkel," but the girls came out on top of this 2ball competition. Then I was off to the All-Star Game, which was very exciting. Even though victory wasn't in the cards for our fellow Eastern Conference guys, it was fun to watch and there was an amazing halftime show. Just to be able to take part in the festivities was wonderful. I got tickets to all the big events and was able to watch Vince "The Highlight Reel" Carter dunk, which was my favorite part of the whole weekend. After that, I just went back to chill out for awhile at the hotel and caught an early flight out the next morning back to Denver, where I would only be for another day. Then I was off again, this time out to Portland, Oregon for WNBA Veteran Camp. Tamika Whitmore and I flew out early so we could get a couple more workouts in before the actual camp started. Liberty assistant coach Jeff House worked us out and entertained us -- he took us to dinner and shopping -- for a couple days. Before I knew it, camp was started. The days were split into two sessions -- a morning session and an afternoon session. The first day was spent splitting into teams, running through a short practice and in the afternoon, scrimmaging in front of a local Portland Fire crowd. There were a total of three WNBA teams, two of them played each other, and the third team played against the National Team. After not feeling well a couple days, my sickness got a little worse and the doctor had me sit out a couple days, but then I bounced back and started feeling a bit better and ended up playing the last two days of camp. This was a good opportunity for both the players and the coaches to see where each other was for this time of the season. After camp, I was up again and on an early flight back to Denver. So, it was a very exciting, but also exhausting, February for me. It has been very nice to be sleeping in my own bed again -- instead of at hotels. And it's nice to get back into some sort of a routine again. Did I mention that I am attending school, too? Thank goodness for understanding professors! Can't wait for the summer. TO THE TOP |
